Canadian Web hosting provider BlueFur announced on Thursday it is now offering Phish Phinder, its anti-phishing plug-in for Microsoft Outlook. The free tool enables users to more accurately determine whether emails are fraudulent or forged.

Phish Phinder scans all incoming emails for HTML links, then extracts the target location of each link, and places it in brackets next to the original anchor text of the link. This process enables users to examine whether or not links are directing to legitimate sites, and not merely fraudulent clones designed to collect confidential information.

“While many organizations focus on Web browsers or attacking hosts, we decided to empower the end user and let them know what they are clicking on before they click on it,” says Lisa Jones, BlueFur president. “As an online business, we are very concerned with the rise of phishing and other forms of fraud, and we will continue to look for new ways to protect our customers.”

BlueFur provides a range of Web development services to over 5,000 clients, including domain name registration, email hosting, Web hosting, merchant accounts, reseller backup software, VoIP services and targeted Web traffic.

Canadian Web hosting provider BlueFur.com announced on Tuesday it has begun a carbon neutral program and will annually plant one tree for each server it operates.

The company created the program by working with a service in Canada to determine the amount of trees required to balance its greenhouse-gas emissions. BlueFur says that because it can’t prevent energy usage for its servers, it hopes that by planting trees, it can offset its overall environmental impact.

“Global warming is creating a dire situation for the planet. We’ve all heard the evidence, most of us have read the reports and frankly, it’s time we step up and do our part,” says Lisa Jones, president of BlueFur. “Most importantly, we hope our leadership in doing this will convince other Web service providers to follow suit.”

BlueFur says it will run the carbon neutral program indefinitely and it hopes to become more environmentally friendly in other ways as they become available.
