Web hosting provider ThinkHost announced on Friday it is increasing its efforts to raise environmental awareness among Web site owners and other Web hosting providers. It recently switched to renewable energy through the purchase of renewable energy credits, which compensate for the electricity it consumes from non-renewable sources.

“Since making the switch to powering our operations via wind/solar sources, it really hasn’t increased our operating expenses by much and we haven’t had to pass on the added cost to our clients,” says Vladislav Davidzon, ThinkHost’s executive director. “The extra cost is a small price to pay to be able to contribute to a real solution to the challenge of global warming.”

As a member of Co-op America and the Organic Trade Association, ThinkHost has emphasized progressive and green business principles since its inception in 1999. It currently sponsors many green groups and non-profit organizations through free and discounted hosting programs, plus a new program called Supporting Social Change.

The program provides free hosting credits to clients who donate to any of over three-dozen organizations listed on its Web site, including GreenPeace and the World Wildlife fund. ThinkHost is also currently revamping its forums and blog to be more oriented toward green business.
